Dr. Christian Emeruwa is a globally recognized sports safety and security expert, strategist, and thought leader with over two decades of experience in the planning, coordination, and delivery of safety and security operations for major international sporting events.
He currently serves as the Head of Safety and Security at the Confederation of African Football, where he founded and built the department from inception into one of the most structured and operationally active safety and security frameworks across global football. His work spans all major CAF competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations, CAF Champions League, and intercontinental tournaments, where he leads the development of safety concepts, operational planning, and risk management strategies across 54 member associations.

Dr. Emeruwa holds a PhD in the Administration and Organization of Sports and an MBA, making him one of the few professionals globally who combine academic depth with extensive field experience. He is a Certified Sports Safety and Security Professional (CSSSP), the first African to attain this distinction, and also the first African to serve as a Senior FIFA Safety and Security Officer at a FIFA World Cup Final venue.
At the international level, Dr. Emeruwa has worked closely with leading global institutions, including FIFA, United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, INTERPOL, and the International Centre for Sport Security. He contributed to the United Nations Global Guide on Security for Major Sporting Events and has participated in high-level international working groups shaping safety and security standards worldwide.
His expertise covers the full spectrum of sports and event safety and security, including risk assessment, crowd management, counter-terrorism preparedness, stadium certification, access control systems, VVIP protection, and integrated command and control operations. He has led safety and security missions across multiple FIFA World Cups, Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, and continental club competitions, as well as global conferences and multi-agency security exercises.
A strong advocate for reform in sports safety across Africa, Dr. Emeruwa has championed the transition from heavily militarized security approaches to modern, intelligence-led and service-oriented stewarding models. He is the architect of the CAF Safe Stadium Initiative, a flagship capacity-building programme that has trained over 1,300 safety and security personnel across more than 30 African countries, significantly enhancing operational standards and reducing risk across the continent.
Beyond football, Dr. Emeruwa is the Founder of Alanat Security Consultants, an international consulting firm providing strategic advisory, training, and operational support for sports, entertainment, and major events. Through this platform, he supports governments, event organizers, and private sector clients in designing and implementing world-class safety and security solutions tailored to the African and global context.
Widely respected for his leadership, operational discipline, and strategic foresight, Dr. Emeruwa continues to shape the future of sports safety and security, with a clear vision anchored on his core principle: zero tolerance for preventable incidents and a sustained commitment to achieving zero fatality outcomes at sporting venues.
